THE DEVON SCHOOL OF ENGLISH

A fully-accredited school (British Council, Quality English and English UK) that has been welcoming international students for over 40 years. The school is located in Paignton -Torbay and it is just a short walk from the beach and a park.

THE LOCATION

The South West of England

The South West counties of England, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, are all areas of outstanding natural beauty. The rugged coastlines, windswept moorlands and charming villages, unchanged in centuries, have inspired writers, artists and film makers.

South Devon, home of the main Devon School, is a great place to visit. It has everything from the wild, granite-capped peaks of Dartmoor to the tiny coves and palm-fringed beaches of the south west coast.

Paignton is a seaside town at the centre of a spectacular bay, Torbay on the English Riviera. Paignton is 350 kilometres from London and has a population of 45,000. It is one of England’s most popular tourist destinations and attracts tourists from all over the world. Torbay is famous for its wonderful coastline with over 30 kilometres of beaches. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Torbay enjoys a sub-tropical climate and is one of the only places in England where palm trees and other exotic flowers flourish all year round. In fact, the English Riviera holds the record for the warmest and sunniest days in the United Kingdom.

The area is a paradise for sports lovers, who can choose from horse riding, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, diving, swimming, tennis, golf, parascending… the list is endless.

OUR RECORD IN ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES

In our Course for Trainee Lawyers, participants would take part in small closed classes with fellow trainees studying a mixture of relevant grammar, vocabulary and skills ensuring all trainees have a secure grasp of key concepts, use and phonology. Morning classes aim to introduce and practice new language and increase the participants’ confidence in using English, whilst afternoon lessons are generally used for the practical application of the language in role-plays and case studies and further analysis and coaching improvements. In addition to classroom input and practice with the two regular class teachers, practicing legal professionals will visit the class for Q&A sessions and to assess performance in case studies. Visits to legal practices and courts will also feature as part of the course. These can provide a cross section of civil court (a County Court, a Magistrates’ Court) and criminal court (Crown Court) cases.

THE COURSE PROPOSAL

In our course participants would take part in small closed classes with fellow trainees studying a mixture of relevant grammar, vocabulary and skills ensuring all trainees have a secure grasp of key concepts, use and phonology. Morning classes aim to introduce and practise new language and increase the participants’ confidence in using English, whilst afternoon lessons are generally used for the practical application of the language in roleplays and case studies and further analysis and coaching improvements. Emphasis is placed on the modern use of terms and the critical expectations of register and genre in the use of legal English. In addition to classroom input and practice with the two regular class teachers, practising legal professionals will visit the class for Q&A sessions and to assess performance in case studies. Visits to legal practices and courts will also feature as part of the course. These can provide a cross section of civil court (a County Court, a Magistrates’ Court) and criminal court (Crown Court) cases and may even include a trip to the Royal High Courts of Justice in London. We offer groups a mix of language input and development and practice determined by the level and needs of the group. As with other English for Specific Purpose courses, course content is driven by the trainees and made into a coherent and manageable course structure by the school’s academic directors. Below is a sample timetable and an outline of course contents for the trainee lawyers from Belo Horizonte.
